Checklist To Help Get Your Facebook Fan Page Show-Ready
If you're just getting started with marketing your business on Facebook, the process of creating a Facebook Page may seem daunting to you. You may not know where to begin or end. Use this handy checklist to help you get your Page started and to know when it is finally “show-ready.
First, go to Facebook and click Create Page (at the bottom of the Facebook screen). You'll need to log into your account, as well. Choose the right category. You have several choices to make, and here is a little bit about each one.
Local Business or Category. Choose this option only if you have a storefront or location that people will walk into. This can include restaurants or stores. This option also provides a map to your business, so if you have a home office, do not select this option. Company,
Organization or Institution. Best for most businesses that don't have physical products. Brand or Product. Choose this if you do have a product to sell. Artist,
Band or Public Figure. Great for artists or bands but also high-profile entrepreneurs and politicians. Entertainment. Best for things like libraries, sports teams, books, movies, and other forms of entertainment.
Cause or Community. Choose this for non-profits or local groups. Name your Page.
The name you enter into the category field will be the name of your Page. Use regular spacing, do not add a .com at the end of your name unless that is part of your branding, and do not make your Page name too long. You can change the name up until the point where you have 200 Fans, and then the process to make a name change becomes much harder. Complete your About section. Make sure you have a good About section on your Page with a Short Description that includes your website address if applicable. Your About section is indexed in Google and should have plenty of keywords related to your business.
Add a profile picture of 180 x 180 pixels. Make sure your profile picture looks good when it's small and isn't too busy. A company logo works as long as it's square. Add a vanity URL. The vanity URL will help easily direct people to your Page and is something like http://www.facebook.com/mikesnowdigital. When you are creating the Page for the first time, the vanity URL is called the Facebook Web Address. It must be all one word and unique.
Add a cover photo of 851 x 315 pixels. Your cover photo is critical because it acts as a mini-business card. When people hover over your Facebook Page name in the News Feed, the cover photo appears. Consider adding a tagline or description about what you do on the cover photo itself. Add some posts. Before you start publicizing your Page, make sure you add 5 to 10 new posts to have some content. These posts help people know more about the types of things you will be sharing with them. Share plenty of helpful hints about your niche to make your Page more interesting to your community. Now you are ready to invite people to come and Like your Page. Your Facebook Page will always be a work in progress — you can add applications, create contests, and advertise your Page to grow your community more.
